Prayer Rugs, and Gullibe Right Wngers

LORDSBURG, N.M. — Ranchers and farmers near the U.S.-Mexico border have been

finding prayer rugs on their properties in recent months, according to one rancher who asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation by cartels.



The mats are pieces of carpet that those of the Muslim faith kneel on as they worship.



''There’s a lot of people coming in not just from Mexico,'' the rancher said. ''People, the general public, just don’t get the terrorist threats of that. That’s what’s really scary. You don’t know what’s coming across. We’ve found prayer rugs out here. It’s unreal. It’s not just Mexican nationals that are coming across.''

Our analysts looked into this suspicious tale because it seemed eerily familiar.  Turns out that was for good reason. The right wingers floated a version of the prayer rug story back in 2014.



It received a PANTS on FIRE rating from Politifact.



"Dewhurst said "prayer rugs have recently been found" in brush on the Texas side of the U.S.-Mexico border."



"This claim is weakened because it’s not backed up by sourced-by-name witnesses nor did any authority confirm such a find when we inquired. If prayer rugs were showing up to someone’s alarm, we think there'd be legitimate photographs and the rugs themselves available for inspection."



"In the end, we find his statement incorrect and ridiculous. Rugs (we mean Pants) on Fire!"

Johnson's excuse?  Just sharing something he read somewhere. If we hadn't caught his lie, he'd have run with it. Caught?  No matter to Johnson. He has no problem with spreading lies.
