nam..the issue of slavery was not a moral issue at the time of the war, it was economic. Lincoln promised that there would be no expansion of slavery into western states, yet the north controlled gov't and kept hampering the south, which is where it became a states rights issue. To lincoln, freeing the slaves was an afterthought, his only goal was to preserver the union.
