"We're a Republic - Not a Democracy" Origins

Just read an interesting article about the origins of the meme we see repeated so frequently by right wingers; including those in this room.

“This is a Republic, not a Democracy."

How many times have we seen the wingers use that mantra in an attempt to justify "political inequality and make it the proper order of things."

The author goes on to state, "What lies behind that quip, in other words, is an impulse against democratic representation. It is part and parcel of the drive to make American government a closed domain for a select, privileged few."

Oh, and |GUESS| where historians trace the meme?  Did you guess the John Birch Society?  I hope you did.
