If Vicki is right, then Pale was trying, however clumsily, to suggest that Obama was in some way deceptive, without having to explain the sense in which Obama engendered deception. However the metaphor he chose explicitly suggests a deception involving smuggling into a space considered safe something dangerous. No WONDER people were confused by it.
