Low Information Voters

Are we in a recession? Of course not. But don't ask the American people. A majority believes we ARE. As someone famously said, "Call it stupidity of the American voter, or whatever...."

Well, "stupidity" is rather harsh. How about "ignorance" instead? And these people decide who gets sent to congress and to the WH.

Unfortunately, though, polling has its limits. And few things demonstrate this more than the recession question.

The recession question, as you might or might not presume, is asking people whether or not the United States is currently in a recession. It is not, but a very strong majority of people regularly say that it is -- and it's been that way for years.

Case in point: A new Public Religion Research Institute poll, which shows a whopping 72 percent of people think we are still in an economic recession.

The reference to "the stupidity of the American voter or whatever," of course, comes from the right wing firestorm raised over remarks by one of the architects of the Affordable Care Act. Seems his comments, while a bit "indelicate," are not exactly out of line.

In terms of risk-rated subsidies, in a law that said health people
are gonna pay in — if it made explicit that healthy people are gonna
pay in, sick people get money, it would not have passed. Okay — just
like the … people — transperen— lack of transparency is a huge political
advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter
or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical to get
anything to pass.
