Finally the Times Corrects the Lie about Wolf

The New York Times finally retracted the lie about Naomi Wolf being Gore's "fashion consultant." Seven years late, but better than never I suppose.
"An article last Sunday about politicians' choice of clothing while campaigning referred incorrectly to the role of Naomi Wolf in Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign. She was a consultant on women's issues and outreach to young voters; she was not Mr. Gore's image consultant and was not involved in his decision to wear earth-toned clothing."

RNC Lie? Say It Ain't So

Who in a million years would ever have imagined that the RNC would lie about what a Democratic candidate for president said?

Here's the statement from RNC Chairman Robert M. “Mike” Duncan:
“It was bad enough when Harry Reid attacked our military commanders. It was worse when the number three Democrat in the House said that good news in Iraq would be a ‘problem’ for Democrats. But neither could top Barack Obama’s offensive statement in New Hampshire that our men and women serving in Afghanistan are just ‘air-raiding villages and killing civilians.’ It is hard to imagine that anyone who aspires to be Commander in Chief would say such a thing about our brave men and women in uniform. Obama owes our armed forces an apology – today.” [emphasis added]
Powerful stuff, eh? But wait. Let's look an see what Obama REALLY said:
"We've got to get the job done there [in Afghanistan] and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous problems there."
Big difference, eh? He said we have to do more than "just air-raiding villages." He didn't say that our troops are ONLY air-raiding villages. I know that it's a fine distinction, but does anyone REALLY believe that Duncan didn't pick up that distinction?

What Liberal Media?

For a good read on the double standards our pundits employ go to Media Matters:
"The episode highlights the clear double standard political pundits and reporters use when judging Democratic and Republican presidential candidates by their embarrassing, unscripted moments out on the stump. For Democrats, foul-ups are often portrayed as revealing moments of character. Yet when a Republican candidate like Romney lets loose with what even one conservative blogger called "the dumbest answer ever by a presidential candidate," the press turns away."

They Lie, and We All Know It

My theory is that the wingers don't even CARE that we know they're lying......

They figure that those of us who KNOW they're lying will never be convinced by their lies anyway, so who gives a damn if we know they're lying.

They'll just lie with the hope that the dumb asses out there will be conned.

And the sad news is -- it friggin works!

How They Try to Con Us

A recent news release by Rasmussen tells us in its headline: "Democratic Presidential Candidates Have No Advantage Over GOP Hopefuls on Iraq, the Economy, or Restoring the Nation’s Optimism."

But later, let's look at each of the the three points: Iraq, the economy, and optimism for the US. What does Rasmussen REALLY find and report? The article says this:

1st, on Iraq: "When it comes to resolving the situation in Iraq, 42% of the nation’s voters say they are most likely to trust one of the leading Democratic Presidential candidates while 41% name a Republican candidate." Advantage - Democrats

2nd, the Economy: "As for the economy, 44% say they’re most likely to trust one of the Democratic candidates while 43% opt for a Republican." - Advantage - Democrats

3rd - Restoring the Nation's Optimism: "The Democrats enjoy a very modest three-point advantage on the question of restoring the nation’s optimism." - Advantage - Democrats

Odd, eh? The headline tells us the Democrats don't enjoy an advantage, but then the facts tell us they DO.

Congress doesn't see same intelligence as president, report finds, 12/15/05

When the Bush supporters tell you that congress saw the exact same intel that Bush did, don't believe them. As matter of fact, Bush himself has made the false claim. Read this news item by Jonathan Landay about this matter. Seems the Congressional Research Service found out the truth about that.
""Some of the most irresponsible comments—about manipulating intelligence—have come from politicians who saw the same intelligence I saw and then voted to authorize the use of force against Saddam Hussein," Bush said on Wednesday in his most recent speech. "These charges are pure politics."

The Congressional Research Service, by contrast, said: "The president, and a small number of presidentially designated Cabinet-level officials, including the vice president ... have access to a far greater overall volume of intelligence and to more sensitive intelligence information, including information regarding intelligence sources and methods."

Unlike members of Congress, the president and his top officials also have the authority to ask U.S. intelligence agencies more extensively for follow-up information, the report said. "As a result, the president and his most senior advisers arguably are better positioned to assess the quality of the ... intelligence more accurately than is Congress."

The CRS report identified nine key U.S. intelligence "products" that aren't generally shared with Congress. These include the President's Daily Brief, a compilation of analyses that's given only to the president and a handful of top aides, and a daily digest on terrorism-related matters.

The White House didn't respond to a request for comment."

Russert's Irrational Hatred of Hillary

Thanks to the Daily Howler for this one.
"RUSSERT PICKS CHERRIES AGAIN! Clinton leads Rudy in ten of twelve polls. Guess which two Russert presented?"
We and Media Matters have noticed too.
"Russert has repeatedly cherry-picked polls to assert that Clinton is running behind Giuliani in a head-to-head matchup. As Media Matters for America documented, during a discussion of Clinton's "electability" on the June 13 edition of NBC's Nightly News, Russert cited a June 1-3 Gallup poll that found Clinton's "favorable rating amongst all Americans was 46 percent, her disapproval, 50 percent," and called this "a real warning sign." He concluded that "it would be a very difficult, hotly contested campaign -- winnable -- but no doubt difficult." In his response, Russert did not address a June 8-11 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll that found Clinton would win a head-to-head matchup with Giuliani 48 percent to 43 percent."
